Olympic and Hoover
Los Angeles, California

Located at the convergence f the historic Los Angeles Spanish grid and the orthogonal grid the Olympic Hoover seeks to designate this important transition in the development of the city. While the Commercial bar along Olympic Boulevard are scaled to recognize the importance of this east/ west arterial street, the U shaped residential tower has its easternmost leg rotated to accentuate the transition of geometries. The complex contains 172 units of market rate housing and 30,000 sf of neighborhood commercial and restaurant space. Community open spaces are located on the podium between the retail and residential portions of the complex and on the roof of the rotated east residential wing. All commercial uses are located along Olympic Blvd, with the residential entrance and lobby located on Hoover. Color and material were used to emphasize the different components and articulate the mass of the building to serve as a gateway from the historic downtown to expanding city to the west. The building massing, materials, and colors are also intended to respond to the pedestrian environment, and the vehicular commute at design speeds as well as in traffic.
